Prayers for Those Who are Suffering or Ill

The Healing Power of Jesus
Jesus, your coming on earth was like a new dawn over a world of darkness; the blind saw, the lame walked again, the sick were healed and even the dead were raised to life. Come again into the lives of everyone and heal the wounds of their broken hearts. Come again to all who are sick or depressed and fill their lives with hope and peace. Come again to us as we call on your holy name so that we too may receive your help and healing grace. Amen.

God, our Father, you sent your only Son Jesus, on earth to heal a broken-hearted and wounded world. He had compassion on those who called on him for help and healing. He touched the sick and guilt-laden, and they walked away in health and freedom of Spirit. Visit us now with his saving power so that we too may be released in mind and body to praise your healing grace through Christ our Lord. Amen.

God, our Father, your Son gave more than he was asked for to those who pleaded with him for healing. People asked for health of body and he released them from their sins as well; he touched their skin and healed the deep wounds of the spirit. May we be touched by the same healing power and thus be released from the hidden forces deep within us which hold us back from true health of mind and body. Amen.

Lord Jesus, you are the great friend of the sick, And you healed them while you were on earth. Grant them once more your healing power and comfort them in their affliction. Come, Holy Spirit, strengthen them so that they may find renewed health both in soul and body. Amen.

For All Who Suffer
O Lord, who does feel the pain of the world, look upon all sick and suffering persons; enfold them with your love, that in the midst of pain they may find your presence; to doctors and nurses grant tender hearts and healing hands; and give health again in body and soul, for your tender mercy’s sake. Amen.

For the Sick
Almighty God, look upon those who are sick in body or in mind: on the handicapped and the infirm; on all who suffer pain. Bless, O God, the ministrations of every one who gives them care; let your healing power be their invigoration to restore them to health or alleviate their ills; let your loving-kindness be their solace; and grant them the faith, the patience and the valor by which the spirit serves the flesh and abides unconquered; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O Lord, holy Father, by whose love-kindness our souls and bodies are renewed: Mercifully look upon these your sick servants. May every cause of sickness be removed, and may they be restored to soundness of health through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O Father of mercies and God of all comfort, our only help in time of need: We humbly beseech thee to behold, visit, and relieve thy sick servant N. for whom our prayers are desired. Look upon him/her with the eyes of thy mercy; comfort him with a sense of thy goodness; preserve him/her from the temptations of the enemy; and give him/her patience under his affliction. In thy good time, restore him/her to health, and enable him to lead the residue of his/her life in thy fear, and to thy glory; and grant that finally he/she may dwell with thee in life everlasting; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O Lord, holy Father, creator of the universe, author of its laws, you can bring the dead back to life, and heal those who are sick. We pray for our sick brother/sister that he/she may feel your hand upon him, renewing his/her body and refreshing his/her soul. Show to him/her the affection in which you hold all your creatures. Amen. (7th century, prayer by an Irish monk)

We pray for the sick; grant them health, and raise them up from their sickness and make them to have perfect health of body and soul, for you are the Saviour and Benefactor, you are Lord and King of all. Amen. (Serapion [d. after 360], Bishop of Thmuis, a disciple of St. Antony, the father of Christian monasticism)

O God, the strength of the weak and the comfort of sufferers: Mercifully accept our prayers, and grant to your servant N. the help of your power, that his/her sickness may be turned into health, and our sorrow into joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O God of heavenly powers, by the might of your command you drive away from our bodies all sickness and all infirmity: Be present in your goodness with your servant N., that his/her weakness may be banished and his/her strength restored; and that, his/her health being renewed, he/she may bless your holy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Heavenly Father, giver of life and health: Comfort and relieve your sick servant N., and give your power of healing to those who minister to his/her needs, that he/she may be strengthened in his/her weakness and have confidence in your loving care; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Sanctify, O Lord, the sickness of your servant N., that the sense of his/her weakness may add strength to his/her faith and seriousness to his/her repentance; and grant that he/she may live with you in everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

May God the Father bless you, God the Son heal you, God the Holy Spirit give you strength. May God the holy and undivided Trinity guard your body, save your soul, and bring you safely to his heavenly country; where he lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.

For a Sick Child
Heavenly Father, watch with us over your child N., and grant that he/she may be restored to that perfect health which it is yours alone to give; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Lord Jesus Christ, Good Shepherd of the sheep, you gather the lambs in your arms and carry them in your bosom: We commend to your loving care this child N. Relieve his/her pain, guard him/her from all danger, restore to him your gifts of gladness and strength, and raise him/her up to a life of service to you. Hear us, we pray, for your dear Name’s sake. Amen.

Before an Operation
Almighty God our heavenly Father, graciously comfort your servant N. in his/her suffering, and bless the means made use of for his cure. Fill his/her heart with confidence that, though at times he/she may be afraid, he yet may put his/her trust in you; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Strengthen your servant N., O God, to do what he/she has to do and bear what he/she has to bear; that, accepting your healing gifts through the skill of surgeons and nurses, he/she may be restored to usefulness in your world with a thankful heart; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For People in Severe Pain
Jesus, you knew pain,
you knew the loneliness, the weakness
   and the degradation it brings;
You knew the agony.
Jesus, your suffering is our only hope,
the only reconciliation for those who suffer.
Be with N as he/she grapples with the pain he/she suffers now.
Be a promise to him/her
   that this present suffering will cease;
Be the hand that he/she can hold;
Be present, Saviour, for we need you now. Amen.

For the Incurable
O Lord, you feel the pain of the world; look with mercy, we pray, upon those in their sickness and suffering who are beyond the reach of human skill. To you alone belongs the power of life, and these souls are yours. If in the mystery of your providence it shall be their lot to bear their infirmity to the end, then, Lord, of your love give them grace to endure bravely, and such an assurance of your presence with them in it that they may, like their Savior, be made perfect through suffering. Amen.

O heavenly Father, we pray for those suffering from diseases for which at present there is no cure. Give them the victory of trust and hope, that they may never lose their faith in your loving purpose. Grant your wisdom to all who are working to discover the causes of disease, and the realization that through you all things are possible. We ask in the Name of him who went about doing good and healing all manner of disease, your Son, Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayers of a Sick Person:
For Trust in God
O God, the source of all health: So fill my heart with faith in your love, that with calm expectancy I may make room for your power to possess me, and gracefully accept your healing; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For Quiet Confidence
O God of peace, who hast taught us that in returning and rest we shall be saved, in quietness and in confidence shall be our strength: By the might of thy Spirit lift us, we pray thee, to thy presence, where we may be still and know that thou art God; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Resignation in Illness
God, you are a loving Father who will not cause a needless tear; give us then a peaceful heart at rest in the present trouble which afflicts us and which we offer to you in union with the sufferings of Christ, your Son. May we concentrate more on your love and care rather than our own selfish preoccupation with physical pain and emotional disturbance. You know the right time to lift the burden that oppresses us and so we place the present moment, as we do our whole lives, in your tender care. Put your rest in our minds and your peace in our hearts. Amen.

Lord, sanctify my sickness. May my weakness add strength to my faith and seriousness to my repentance. Grant that I may live with you in everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

God’s Presence in Suffering
Father, you do not protect us against catastrophes but in them you come to our aid. It is in the very midst of the tempest and misfortune that a wonderful zone of peace, serenity and joy bursts in us if we dwell in your grace. You do not help us before we have helped ourselves, but when we are at the end of our resources you manifest yourself, and we begin to know that you have been there all the time. Amen.

For Inner Strength
Let me not pray to be sheltered from dangers
but to be fearless in facing them.
Let me not beg for the stilling of my pain
but for the heart to conquer it.
Let me not crave in anxious fear to be saved
but hope for the patience to win my freedom.
Grant me that I may not be a coward, feeling your mercy in my success alone; but let me find the grasp of your hand in my failure.

For Patience
Lord, teach me the art of patience whilst I am well, and give me the use of it when I am sick. In that day either lighten my burden or strengthen my back. Make me, who so often in my health have discovered my weakness presuming on my own strength, to be strong in my sickness when I solely rely on thy assistance. (Thomas Fuller, 1608-61, Anglican priest)

Meditation on the Good Use of Sickness
Lord, you are good and gentle in all your ways; and your mercy is so great that not only the blessings but also the misfortunes of your people are channels of your compassion. Grant that I may turn to you as a Father in my present condition since the change in my own state from health to sickness brings no change in you. You are always the same, and you are my loving Father in times of trouble and in times of joy alike. Amen. (Blaise Paschal, 1623-62, French mathematician)

In Pain
Lord Jesus Christ, by your patience in suffering you hallowed earthly pain and gave us the example of obedience to your Father’s will: Be near me in my time of weakness and pain; sustain me by your grace, that my strength and courage may not fail; heal me according to your will; and help me always to believe that what happens to me here is of little account if you hold me in eternal life, my Lord and my God. Amen.

In the Morning
This is another day, O Lord. I know not what it will bring forth, but make me ready, Lord, for whatever it may be. If I am to stand up, help me to stand bravely. If I am to sit still, help me to sit quietly. If I am to lie low, help me to do it patiently. And if I am to do nothing, let me do it gallantly. Make these words more than words, and give me the Spirit of Jesus. Amen.

For Sleep
O heavenly Father, you give your children sleep for the refreshing of soul and body: Grant me this gift, I pray; keep me in that perfect peace which you have promised to those whose minds are fixed on you; and give me such a sense of your presence, that in the hours of silence I may enjoy the blessed assurance of your love; through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.

Lord Jesus Christ, who slept on a storm-tossed lake, grant me the gift of sleep so that with a mind at peace, a heart at rest, and a body relaxed I may use my sleeping hours for healing and waken strengthened to renew my tasks with brighter vision, confidence and hope. Amen.
